There have been many times in my life I’ve felt anxious about what to say or do for someone experiencing the loss of a loved one.

Every time these situations arise, I’d find myself sending flowers. At the funeral, I would find myself feeling like my condolence was lost in a sea of sameness amidst the other floral arrangements. It was as if my expression of sympathy might be interpreted as shallow, thoughtless, or sent as a formality. This was definitely NOT how I wanted my sincere condolence to be received.

Then, I decided to try something different.

I approached a girlfriend who recently lost her dad and asked if she’d be comfortable providing me with an article of his clothing so that I could create something special for her. She gave me one of her dad’s hunting jackets and I proceeded to have my mother-in-law, an extremely talented seamstress, hand-craft a beautiful memory bear.

When I presented the hand-sewn bear to her, she broke down in tears, hugged it tightly, and expressed how incredibly beautiful it was. I loved seeing her happy tears and her smile as she hugged her bear.

My expression of sympathy touched her deeply.
